A school runs on a timetable, and so do its doors. The front office opens first and classrooms open in blocks. The gym and library open to hirers after hours, and everything has to lock again at night. That means a long list of key holders: teachers, relief staff, grounds staff, cleaners, canteen volunteers, out-of-hours care and whoever runs Saturday sport.

Staff leave at the end of term and their keys don’t always come back. Science prep rooms, IT stores and the chemical cupboard need their own key, separate from the classroom key. Some classrooms should lock from the inside. At a childcare centre, the front door has to stay shut to the street all day.

• Master key system. The business manager carries a grand master. Each building or faculty gets a sub-master, and teachers get a key for their own rooms.
• Access control on main entries, staff rooms and after-hours doors. When someone leaves, you cancel their card or fob that day.
• Electric strikes on gates and entries, so a hall or gym can open for a hirer with nobody from the school on site.
