Good to know
A lock that opens without a key
An electronic lock opens when it gets a signal. That signal can come from a keypad, a card reader, a timer or a button at reception. So you can buzz a visitor in from your desk. The front door can stay open while you trade and lock itself at close.
The electronic lock is the hardware on the door. Access control is the system that tells it when to open. You don’t always need both. A keypad lock on a storeroom works by itself, with no wiring.
Strikes, maglocks and keypad locks
- Electric strikes replace the strike plate in the frame and release the latch on a signal. They’re the usual choice for an existing door.
- Magnetic locks use an electromagnet on the frame to hold a plate on the door. With no moving parts, they suit glass doors and busy entries.
- Keypad and pushbutton locks put a PIN on the door itself, with no wiring. We fit dormakaba and Borg, and most have a key override.
- Digital and smart locks from dormakaba, Lockwood and SALTO open for a card, fob or phone.
- Motorised deadbolts and battery-powered strikes go on doors where running power is hard.
Strikes are mostly Lox. If a strike or maglock on site has failed, tell us the brand when you call. Other ranges are on the brands page.
What we ask before we order anything
- Call 08 8410 3333 or send the quote form. Tell us the door: what it’s made of, which way it swings, and what should open it.
- We work out fail-safe or fail-secure. A fail-safe lock unlocks when the power drops. A fail-secure lock stays locked. The right one depends on what the door is for and how people get out.
- We quote, supply and fit the lock, and connect it to the keypad, reader or button that controls it.
- We test it with you before we leave. It has to release on the signal, hold the rest of the time, and still open from the inside.
Booked work runs Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 4:30pm. If a lock fails after close, ring 08 8410 3333.
Doors we fit them to
- Reception doors that need a buzz-in button
- Storerooms, drug rooms and server rooms, where a PIN you can change beats a key that gets copied
- Glass and aluminium shopfront doors
- Gates and back doors that should lock themselves at a set time
- Any door you want on a card and fob system
